Where do we go from here?
At the date of writing (July 2006) our petition is still under consideration at the Scottish Parliament, almost a year after it was first submitted.
Recently, without even affording us the courtesy of a telephone call, the council began improvements in the park and around the statue. We feel that the considerable sum of money spent could have been greatly reduced had the council simply removed the statue to the town centre. Immediately the work was completed the statue and the new floodlights were again vandalised.
The Statue Vandalised Again!
This outcome is no surprise, as the same approach was tried back in 1978 - with the same result!
More recently, during the annual wreath-laying attended by Burns dignitaries from across the UK (including the President of the World Burns Federation), embarrassment was felt by many when the statue was again found to be covered in disgusting graffiti.
Despite the Labour group’s continual refusal to meet us we still receive expressions of support and donations and have recently given our statue presentation to the “Barrmill Jolly Beggars” and Greenock Burns Clubs.
This website represents the next level in our campaign and it is our intention to see that it is disseminated as widely as possible, in order to increase awareness of the long-standing injustice surrounding this highly-regarded tribute to Scotland’s National Bard, both locally and among lovers of fine sculpture and poetry everywhere.
Our campaign will continue until the efforts of the working-class girls of the Tannahill Choir are at last properly recognised, and this valuable art treasure is restored to the people of Paisley to be used as originally intended, as a prominent and proud ornament to the town centre.
